Welcome from the Dean
Welcome to the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne, the first veterinary school in Australia. The Faculty has a long history of excellence in all areas of veterinary science including research, teaching, clinical practice and support of the profession. But we are not resting on our laurels; rather, the Faculty of Veterinary Science is taking an innovative new approach to veterinary education with the introduction of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program to Australia. The University of Melbourne begins teaching this exciting new veterinary program in 2011.
When you study veterinary science at the University of Melbourne, you do so at one of the world’s finest universities, and in a school of veterinary science that ranks with the best in the world. It is our strong belief that veterinary programs must evolve and change to remain relevant and ensure graduates are equipped with the personal, professional and scientific skills to excel in veterinary science in the 21st century. The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is a contemporary veterinary program that draws on our century of experience and is informed by international best practice in veterinary science, tertiary learning and teaching.
The new program demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to veterinary education and preparation for a life-long career in veterinary science. We are the first in Australia to bring the study of veterinary science in line with the best overseas models but with important modifications to ensure that the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine provides higher-level theoretical and practical training that is relevant both within Australia and world-wide. There has never been a better time to enter veterinary science at the University of Melbourne.
The new program takes advantage of the exceptionally strong research conducted in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. The Faculty is recognised internationally for the high quality of research conducted by its academic staff and research higher degree students. We have a strong research programs in infectious diseases (both parasitic and microbial), bone diseases, diseases of poultry and horses, and diseases of ruminants affecting agricultural production, to name but a few. The Faculty is proud to offer research training, leading to a Masters degree or PhD, that is supervised by world-leading academics.
