Departments and Centres

Campuses

The Faculty is located on two separate sites or campuses: Parkville and Werribee.

Clinical centres

Veterinary Clinic and Hospital in Werribee provides intensive care and emergency treatment for small animals after hours and at weekends and public holidays all year.

The Equine Centre is located at the Veterinary Clinic and Hospital at Werribee

The Rural Veterinary Centre at Maffra specialises in dairy cattle medicine and production and has operated in association with the Maffra Veterinary Practice since 1978.

The Mackinnon Project was established in 1983 with the support of the Scobie and Claire Mackinnon Trust. This Centre provides undergraduate teaching, graduate training, research and consultative services to the sheep and beef cattle industries.

Departments

The Department of Veterinary Science is the academic department located at the Parkville (Preclinical) and Werribee (Para-clinical and Clinical) campuses and is responsible for teaching the Bachelor of Veterinary Science course (BVSc), graduate training, and conducting research in specialist disciplines.

The Department of Veterinary Clinic and Hospital is the University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital located at Werribee, 33 km from the Parkville Campus. It provides the clinical teaching resources for students in all years of the BVSc course. The Veterinary Clinic and Hospital is managed by the Faculty of Veterinary Science and reported by the University as an auxiliary operation monitored by the University Finance Committee.

Research

Research Centres

Current research in the Gasser Laboratory focuses on the molecular parasitology of protozoan and metazoan parasites of major animal and human health importance and has three main streams.

The Centre for Animal Biotechnology and Centre for Equine Virology are research centres located at the Parkville Western Precinct Campus with the new Bio21 Institute.

The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Veterinary Science is a core partner in the Australian Poultry Cooperative Research Centre.
