March 2009 marked the centenary of the opening of the Veterinary School at the University of Melbourne. Since 1909 our staff and students have made an impact globally, enhancing animal health and welfare, caring for animals that provide companionship to humans and carrying out groundbreaking research that has improved the health of animals and humans.

Professor Emeritus Ivan Caple has been instrumental in shaping the School into the top-class veterinary education and research facility that it is today. During a career at the School spanning three decades, including 16 years as Dean, Professor Caple initiated the development of a new curriculum and enhanced facilities that saw the Bachelor of Veterinary Science ranked as the number one degree at the University.

As the School of Veterinary Science moves towards another change in its curriculum, with the introduction in 2011 of its new graduate degree, this lecture will examine its contribution to veterinary training and research in Australia over the past 100 years. The longevity of the School depends on its ability to remain relevant to potential students, and to conduct research at a standard to attract competitive funding from an ever-changing landscape of sponsors. The development of productive partnerships within and outside the University will be essential for the longevity of the Melbourne School of Veterinary Science over the next 100 years.
