Giving to the Faculty of Veterinary Science
You can help us achieve our goals to educate world class veterinary science graduates who are able to solve health, welfare and management problems to improve both animals and humans.
There are many ways to assist the Faculty of Veterinary Science through giving.
Scholarships
Students in Veterinary Science come from a broad range of backgrounds and their passion to undertake the course and achieve their career goal of becoming a veterinarian often outstrips their financial resources. Scholarships can open doors of opportunity to those with the greatest potential, rather than just the greatest advantage. Depending on the size of the gift, there are naming opportunities for scholarships, bequests and prizes.
Research
Contribute towards humane research with results that lead to improved health for both animals and humans. These contributions help veterinary medicine control diseases and benefit the long-term welfare of animals. One example of this is the work of Faculty researchers who are developing a vaccine to immunise pigs against the parasite Taenia solium, which causes tapeworm infestations in 50 million people each year.
Expanded Facilities
Buildings and equipment need to be kept up-to-date for the practice of modern veterinary medicine. The Faculty of Veterinary Science must continually expand the teaching hospital, research laboratories and classrooms to meet the growing demand for highly trained veterinarians and to improve veterinary medical treatments. Depending on the size of the gift, there are naming opportunities for rooms as well as buildings.
Pet Memorial Fund
Veterinarians and veterinary clinics are invited to contribute to animal health studies in memory of their clients' deceased animals.
Back a Blood Hound
The Canine Blood Bank is the premier supplier of blood and plasma for transfusions in dogs throughout Australia. You are invited to sponsor one of our 50 Greyhound blood donors. A full sponsorship to cover the costs of feed and care for each of these marvellous dogs for a year is $1600.
Annual Fund
By contributing to the annual fund you are allowing the Dean the flexibility to use your gift in the areas that will support the initiation of new programs and areas with greatest need.

Types of Gifts
The following are common methods people choose to make gifts. All gifts over $2 are tax deductible.
- Cash Gifts - Outright gifts made through cash, cheques, credit card (106kb pdf), electronic funds transfer, or wire transfer. These gifts are often made through the University Fund annual appeal, but are welcome any time of year.
- Cultural Gifts - including personal property such as rare books, works of art, valuable collectibles and tangible items of demonstrated value.
- Pledges - The Faculty of Veterinary Science welcomes your gift through a pledge - a formal statement of intention to make a gift, at intervals convenient to the donor. A pledge often allows donors to make a more generous gift through payments over time.
- Major Gifts - In addition to your annual support, you may also choose to make a special gift to a particular initiative, such as an endowment to support a specified area in perpetuity. These gifts are usually substantial in size (from $25,000 upwards) and demonstrate far-sighted commitment to the University of Melbourne and its leadership.
- Bequests - By including the Faculty of Veterinary Science in your will, you can pass on support from your remaining estate. We encourage those who include the University in their will to inform the Advancement Office so such support can be acknowledged and recognised during their lifetime.
- Matching Gifts - Many corporations promote their employees' philanthropy by matching their donations. Talk to your human resources department to see if your gift's impact can be multiplied.
