Cother, William James, GMVC 1891

William James Cother was the first student to complete the full course and graduate from the Melbourne Veterinary College in 1891. He passed with Honours while employed in the Postmaster’s Department. He transferred to the Stock Department as an Inspector in 1897 and later became a Veterinary Officer in the Department of Agriculture. In 1911 he was appointed to the position of Chief Inspector of Stock, being the first veterinarian to hold this position in Victoria. He retired in 1916 and then Captain in the Australian Army Veterinary Corps, serving in the Sea Transport Service.
