Stanley Fletcher

Major Stanley Fletcher, M.C., M.I.D., B.V.Sc. (Melb) died on 13 November, 1961, at Hutt Hospital [NZ].  Veteran Boer War, 1st Australian Division Army Veterinary Corps;  in his 89th year.

Stanley Fletcher was a well-known and respected general practitioner in Masterton [NZ] for many years.  He will be remembered as a valiant old-timer, kindly and conscientious, humane and ethical.

In reminiscent mood he brought to life again the pioneering past and vividly recounted memorable experiences in peace and war.  These included an occasion–which in some circles might be regarded as privileged–when, as a small boy native Australia, he accompanied his father on a visit to the local police barracks and there had pointed out to him a bearded, bandaged prisoner who happened to be Ned Kelly.  But, realizing that all generations are pioneering and that there is no finality, he lived in the present, too, and kept up with the times although more than eighty years old when he retired.

The late Stanley Fletcher was of general honest thought and nature could truly say this was a gentleman.
