Murray-Jones, Frederick, LVSc 1911

LT. COL. F. MURRAY-JONES, V.D., B.V.Sc., M.R.C.V.S.

On 16th August, 1944, the death occurred, at 110th A.G.H., of Lt. Col. F. Murray-Jones, V.D., B.V.Sc., M.R.C.V.S.  The late Lt. Col. Murray-Jones was born at Collingwood, Victoria, on 18th May, 1882.

He was educated for the veterinary profession at the University of Melbourne, from where he graduated B.V.Sc. in 1912.  After graduation he joined the Stock and Brands Department, South Australia, as veterinary officer.  On the outbreak of war in August, 1914, he was posted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment with the rank of Captain; and with this unit he proceeded overseas in September, 1914, serving in Egypt and Palestine.  During the campaign 1914-18 he became O.C. of a veterinary mobile section, and later was appointed as Veterinary Staff Officer to an Imperial mounted division.

At the conclusion of the war Lt. Col. Murray-Jones attended the Royal Veterinary College, London, and graduated M.R.C.V.S. in July, 1919.  On his return to Australia he resumed duty with the Stock and Brands Department in South Australia until 1925, when he was appointed Chief Veterinary Officer in Western Australia.  He continued in this office until 1930, when he entered private practice in Perth.  His period of office in government service in Western Australia was marked by the appointment of a veterinary pathologist and an increase in the staff of veterinary officers and stock inspectors employed by the Department.  In fact his dynamic personality and organizing ability resulted in a complete reorganisation of the Stock Branch.

On the outbreak of war in 1939, Lt. Col. Murray-Jones was called up for full-time military duty as D.A.D.V.S., Western Command.  He served in this post until his death.  He is survived by a widow and one daughter.
