University Veterinary School Roll of Honour

Mylrea, Edward Alexander, BVSc 1916

E.A. MYLREA, B.V.Sc

It is with regret that we have to record the death on 15th October 1958 of Edward Alexander Mylrea, Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Primary Industry, whose headquarters were in Sydney.

Mr Mylrea was born in Williamstown, Victoria in December 1894.  The latter part of his schooling was spent at the Melbourne High School.  He then attended the University of Melbourne where he graduated B.V.Sc in 1916.

Immediately after graduation he joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corps with which he saw service from the 10th August 1916 to 4th August 1920.  During that time he was in the Middle East (Salonika) for two and a half years and for eighteen months with the Army of Occupation in Constantinople.  In 1917, Mr Mylrea was mentioned in despatches.  On his return to Australia in 1920 he went into private practice in Seymour, Victoria and later at Hamilton.

In 1924 Mr Mylrea joined the Meat Export Branch of the Department of Trade and Customs as a Veterinary Officer and spent the greater part of his professional life in Queensland and New South Wales.  He was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer in October 1956.  During World War II he acted as D.A.D.V.S. in Queensland.

Over the years Mr Mylrea took a very keen and active interest in the affairs of the Australian Veterinary Association.  When the Veterinary Association in Queensland was reformed in 1928 he was their first Secretary and Treasurer; he was also a past President of the Queensland Division and a member of Council for many years.

To Mrs Mylrea and son Peter, a graduate of the University of Sydney Veterinary School, we extend our very deep sympathy.
