EDWARD ALEXANDER WESTON

The veterinary profession has sustained a great loss in the death of E. A. Weston at Perth on 11th March of this year.

Born in Tasmania in 1877, the late E. A. Weston, B.V.Sc. (Melbourne), came to Western Australia in 1911 to join the Stock Branch of the Department of Agriculture, Perth.  He resigned in 1913 in order to accept the newly created position of Lecturer in Veterinary Science at the University of Western Australia.  While in this position he also carried out valuable extension work.  He served abroad with the 10th Light Horse during 1915 and 1916, being invalided home.  Despite continued ill health, which thereafter incapacitated him from carrying out any regular duties and forced him to live in semi-retirement, he maintained his keen interest in veterinary affairs and did much to arouse in the community a better appreciation of the value of the profession.  He played an important part in the early stages of the rinderpest outbreak in 1923.

He was a prime mover in the initiation of a Veterinary Association in this State, and was for many years its very active Honorary Secretary.  He was also a past President.  He represented this State on the Council of the Australian Veterinary Association, and until 1933 was State Editor for The Australian Veterinary Journal.

From 1938 to the time of his death he was a member of the Veterinary Journal of Western Australia.

The late Mr. Weston was a versatile and able member of the profession and, following the breakdown of his health, still maintained his sound and wide professional knowledge by extensive reading.  His clear thinking, readiness to assist and his cheerfulness and courage in the face of adversity endeared him to many who will miss him both personally and professionally.
