BVMS (Murdoch 1981)  Following graduation Dr Martin worked in private veterinary practice for several years before undertaking an Honours degree in Veterinary Biology at Murdoch University and then a Doctor of Philosophy at Queensland University.  She was awarded her PhD in 1994 for a thesis on effects of nutrition on the reproduction of broodmares.  She then worked for the Western Australian Department of Agriculture prior to commencing work in 1995 with the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, Australian Government Department of Agriculture Fisheries & Forestry in Canberra, as a Senior Veterinary Officer.

In 2004, Dr Martin was promoted to General Manager of Animal Biosecurity, Biosecurity Australia – a pioneering female to the Senior Executive Service in the veterinary sector, and is responsible for managing the development of quarantine policies to manage the risk of exotic disease and pest incursions associated with the import of animals and their products together with providing technical input for exports of animals.  Dr Martin played a significant role in the development of quarantine policies for the successful importation and management of over 200 horses which competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Dr Martin is a member of Animal Health Committee, Aquatic Animal Health Committee, and the Standing Research committee for the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease.  She has also been a member on several expert groups for the World Organisation for Animal Health.  Dr Martin has been involved in capacity building projects – particularly in south-east Asia, and has led several successful workshops on import risk analysis.  She is the author of several scientific papers and has given many presentations to veterinarians and scientists both in Australia and overseas.
