Dr Robin Giesecke

Dr P E R Sanders was the second woman to be registered by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of SA, and the first to be registered as a Veterinary Surgeon.  She was the second woman to apply for registration, and applied to the Veterinary Surgeons Board for registration as a Veterinary Surgeon, in 1947.  Her application included her qualification, which was a Veterinary Surgeon’s degree from the UK, and that she was a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.  Her application was immediately granted, and so she became the first Veterinary Surgeon registered by the Board.   Her number was 29.  She later married, and registered in her married name of Read.  Dr Read was registered continuously from 1947 to 1973, and she raised the profile of the veterinary profession by regularly promoting the profession on the radio in South Australia.

Her practice was mainly in small animals, and she pioneered flank surgery for desexing.  Dr Read was also the first veterinary surgeon in SA to specialize in dogs and cats.  In 1981 she was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia Medal.  Citation:  For service in the field of animal welfare.

Dr Read made a significant contribution to the veterinary profession, serving as President and Committee member of the SA Division of the AVA, and as a foundation member of the Small Animal Practitioners Branch (SA), the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists and the UK Society of Women Veterinarians.
