Career highlights:

  • Demonstrator in Large Animal Medicine University of Melbourne Veterinary Faculty (1974-1975) Farm Clinic (1978-1979).
  • One of the founding staff members at the Veterinary School in Malaysia - teaching Physiology, Large Animal Medicine and running the ambulatory clinic for 2 and 1/2 years (1975-1978).
  • Responsible for the animal health checks etc for 2 Asian elephants transported from Malaysia to Melbourne Zoo in 1977 and 1978.
  • Dairy practice, Korumburra, Victoria (1979).
  • PhD University of Queensland (1980-1984) resulted in development of the first commercial viral vaccine for cattle in Australia – the vaccine for Bovine Ephemeral Fever originally marketed by Arthur Webster P/L now marketed by Fort Dodge.
  • PhD also resulted in the development of a commercial immunotherapeutic product for the treatment of Equine Sarcoid previously marketed by CSL.
  • Involved in numerous animal health consultancies in China (1993-2002).
  • Ten years as a diagnostic pathologist at the NSW Agriculture Regional Veterinary Laboratory at Armidale (1986-1996). Whilst at the RVL, Barbara led some important applied research relating to feed related disease in feedlot cattle including urolithiasis, polioencephalomalacia and the identification and prevention of Vitamin A and Vitamin E deficiencies in feedlot cattle.
  • Currently employed by NSW Department of Primary Industries, Beef Industries Centre, University of New England Armidale (1996-present) involved in various projects associated with the Beef Cooperative Research Centre (Beef CRC) and meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). In particular, Barbara has led projects for the Beef CRC and MLA which have focused on understanding of food safety issues related to pathogens associated with beef and mutton/lamb products.
  • First woman veterinarian  in NSW to be registered at as Specialist in Pathobiology (1989)
  • A breadth of scientific papers and book chapters ranging from immunology, virology, cattle, sheep and horse diseases, wildlife and laboratory animal diseases to human food safety.
