In addition to receiving a First Class Honours degree in Veterinary Science, Andrew Burton, 22, of Melbourne has also been awarded four student prizes, including the prestigious Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association (ASAVA) student prize.

A former student of Melbourne Grammar School, Andrew received the ASAVA award for obtaining the highest aggregate marks in Professional Practice 1, 2 and 3.

Andrew said the prize came as a bit of a surprise. “I had no idea I would receive this award,” he said. “I do have a strong clinical background having worked as a veterinary technician, and having completed an externship at Colorado State University, but it was still an amazing surprise!”

After five years at University, Andrew has already found himself a job in Brisbane working as an intern in emergency and critical care, surgery and internal medicine.

“Although we spend five years learning the theory of veterinary medicine, the ultimate test is whether or not we can apply that information with clinical significance. Obtaining this award is a great honour, and it has given me a great confidence boost before I commence in my new career.”
