World-renowned animal surgeon to speak at workshop

Press release
17 October 2007

Internationally recognised small animal surgery expert, Associate Professor Eric Monnet, from Colorado State University, will present a one-day ‘Minimally Invasive Surgery’ workshop, which is being hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Science on Saturday 1 December 2007.

Associate Professor Monnet, a fellow of the American Heart Association, who also has clinical interests in soft tissue and thoracic surgery, will provide a comprehensive review of the essentials in laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery, including diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.

Specialist surgeons, residents, interns and interested general practitioners from Australia and New Zealand will have the opportunity to attend a morning lecture series as well as an afternoon hands-on workshop, located at the Faculty’s state-of-the-art clinic and hospital in Werribee, Victoria.

Other important topics that will be addressed include:  the basic principles of minimally invasive surgery; approaches and biopsy techniques; ovariectomy and ovariohysterectomy; pericardectomy; persistent right aortic arch and cholecystectomy.

Dr Guy Yates, Registrar in Small Animal Surgery, at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Veterinary Science said:  “Today ‘minimally invasive surgery’, or what some call ‘endoscopic surgery’ has resulted in marked improvements for animals that need surgery.

“The advantages come from operating via small incisions or natural body openings in order to diagnose and treat disease, pain is markedly reduced and animals tend to recover much more quickly than what they generally would do with conventional surgery techniques.

“The practice of minimally invasive surgery is rapidly advancing in veterinary practice and I expect it will evolve to become the expected standard for many procedures, as it has done in human surgery, as we become more technically proficient and the benefits of its application are more widely realised.

“This type of surgery also requires the usage of specialised equipment, and we are fortunate to have internationally recognised suppliers of medical instruments and devices exhibiting at, and sponsoring the workshop. Storz Endoskope and N. Stenning & Co will provide a full-range of equipment that will be utilised at the workshop.  Equipment will also be on display, with delegates receiving a 10% discount on any purchases made at the workshop.”

Delegates who attend this one-day event will be exposed to the latest developments and techniques that are being utilised in this arena, and be provided with the rare opportunity to speak one-to-one with international expert, Eric Monnet.

The cost to attend the full day workshop is $700, or $70 for attendance to the morning lectures only.  To register at the event, please contact Dr Glenn Edwards or Dr Guy Yates on (03) 9731 2000.
