Veterinary nurse named Student of the Year for Victoria

An equine nurse from the Faculty of Veterinary Science's state of the art Equine Centre has been named Student of the Year for Victoria.

Lynette Jackson was given the award by the Animal Industries Resource Centre (AIRC) after completing her Certificate 4 Veterinary Nursing course.

She was chosen by the AIRC in recognition of the outstanding effort she put in throughout the course.

Lynette, 27, who is a Senior Equine Nurse at the Veterinary Hospital in Werribee, was nominated by her student advisor who felt she had gone to extraordinary lengths, spending a considerable amount of her spare time on assignments.

The course provided Lynette with a new challenge as it was small animal orientated, whereas in her day job she works at the Equine Centre treating horses with anything from colic and lameness to respiratory problems.

She received a certificate in recognition of her achievement as well as a bottle of champagne and a book on animal nutrition, but says it is the recognition of the amount of time and effort she had put into her course that is most important for her.

“I felt excited and shocked when I heard about the award,” she said. “I didn’t think I would get it because the course I did was more associated with small animals than horses.

“It has given me a lot more knowledge about the industry that I work in.”

Lynette joined the Equine Centre in December 2006 and took on the senior position in May this year. She works alongside the centre’s veterinarians as well as assisting students.

Prior to moving to Melbourne, Lynette was an intensive care nurse in the Equine Intensive Care Unit at Scone Veterinary Hospital, in New South Wales.

Originally from Brisbane, she has also travelled overseas. She worked for 18 months at a large breeding centre for horses in Texas followed by six months in Ireland before returning to Australia.
