"Cosmopolita" - Vet Science Art Competition winners
31 August 2009
A varied and fulfilling student experience at the Faculty of Veterinary Science is vitally important to the Dean and Faculty staff. We have many functions and events each year, but there was no activity for the artistic expression of the staff and students.
Craig & Veronica Kyngdon – wardens of Kendall Hall – came up with the idea of an all-media art competition that would enable staff and students to submit entries in the broad categories of Painting, Drawing, Photography, Sculpture, Mixed Media and Digital Art.
The theme of the competition was based upon "the moment", which was deliberately broad to enable artists to submit works prepared previously and thereby maximise participation. We were not prepared for the response with 72 artworks submitted!
We were very fortunate to have external judges with expertise in their fields to review the artworks and choose the winners. Alejandra Diaz (Artist and Graphic Designer) has won numerous international awards, most recently winning the 2009 Online Graphic Design Competition held by Adobe. Mike Frakes is an amateur photographer who won the International Wildbird Photographer Awards in 2008 (Birds in the Landscape). Both judges gave freely of their time and generously and collegially gave advice to our artists and we are very grateful and thankful for their participation.
