Professor Ken Hinchcliff has been appointed as the new Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne.
Professor Hinchcliff joins the University from the Ohio State University, where he was the Head of Equine Medicine and Surgery.
He is an alumnus of the University of Melbourne, having graduated from the University in 1980 with a first class honours in Veterinary Science. He earned a Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1987 and a PhD from the Ohio State University in 1990.
Professor Hinchcliff is internationally recognised as a scholar of veterinary internal medicine and exercise physiology. He brings with him a wealth of experience that includes teaching undergraduate and graduate students, conducting research into exercise-related conditions in horses, dogs, and humans, and providing high-level medical care to sick and injured foals and horses.
Over the last decade, he has been involved with the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. In this annual dog sled competition, the dogs undertake an epic journey of 1600 kilometres through Alaskan territory. He is part of the team of specialists and veterinarians who research and monitor the health and well-being of the canine athletes.
Professor Hinchcliff has an extensive publication record including over 150 scientific publications in professional journals. He is also extremely proud to be carrying on the University tradition of co-authoring the well-respected textbook – Veterinary Medicine. Now in its tenth edition, the first nine issues were co-authored by the very first Dean of the Faculty - Professor Douglas Blood. In another role, he is the co-editor of one of the world’s leading veterinary publications – the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
The Faculty’s new Dean is looking forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead of him. “I am delighted to have been appointed to serve in the role of Dean of the Faculty from which I graduated. It is exciting to be back in Australia, and with one of the world’s leading universities,” said Professor Hinchcliff.
“Although many things have changed in the Faculty of Veterinary Science in the two decades since I graduated, what has not changed is the high quality of education our students receive, the international standard of the research conducted in the Faculty, and the commitment of the staff and veterinary profession in Victoria to our program.
“This is an exciting time at the University of Melbourne. My vision is for the Faculty to maintain its position as one of the finest professional veterinary schools in the world, and to continue to strive for excellence in all three strands of the ‘Growing Esteem’ strategy - veterinary learning and teaching, research and research training, and knowledge transfer.”
Professor Ken Hinchcliff took up his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science on Monday 23 July 2007.
