Veterinary Students Society of Victoria (VSSV)

President's Welcome

Hello, and welcome to the Veterinary Students Society of Victoria (VSSV) webpage. The VSSV is a not-for-profit organisation which seeks to enrich the student experience for all of its members. The VSSV is run by democratically elected committees from both the Werribee and Parkville campuses. The main aim of the society is to provide support, services and social and educational activities for the student body. Due to legislative changes introduced by the federal government, students now need to pay a voluntary membership fee in order to become a VSSV member. For 2008 this fee will be $55 for first year students and $110 for all other students. If you would like details of how to become a VSSV member (.doc), please email me at vssvwerribee@gmail.com.

In addition to facilitating student-to-student interaction, the VSSV also provides representation from the student body to the faculty and between industry and the student body. The VSSV receives tremendous support from industry sponsors. For further details of sponsorship opportunities for your organisation, including having a stall at the very popular Industry Night, please contact us at vssvwerribee@gmail.com.

We are pleased to have the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) as our Principal Partner again this year, and gratefully acknowledge their support. VSSV members also receive discounted AVA student membership. To apply please complete the AVA-VSSV student membership application form (pdf) and post this with your 2008 Enrolment Confirmation to AVA National. Further details on the benefits of joining the AVA as a student member can be found on the AVA website.

Under the umbrella of the VSSV there are a number of fantastic Special Interest Groups that provide students with the opportunity to explore their own specific interests whether it be with small animals (Smallies), cattle practice (Bovine Appreciation Group), horses (Horse Appreciation Group), wildlife (Wildlife Appreciation Group), sheep (Sheep Appreciation Group) or in the area of animal welfare (Veterinary Students for Animal Welfare). These groups organise a range of activities and events throughout the year giving students the opportunity to meet specialist practitioners, tour facilities around the state and to further their learning through conferences and lunchtime lectures. These groups are run by their own committee who do a fantastic job and are also elected on a yearly basis.

The VSSV organises many social events (.doc) throughout the year which allow students to let their hair down and forget about the stresses of lectures, pracs and impending exams. The most popular events include the Vet Student Ball, Barn Dance, River Cruise and the Vet Dinner. Other popular events designed specifically for particular year levels include the Halfway Dinner (2nd year event) and the Graduation Dinner (4th year event). In addition to these large events, the VSSV organises many other slightly smaller but no less lively social and educational events!

The VSSV is responsible for a number of student services including the VSSV Student Directory, our popular yearbook Albeitera and our regular email newsletter Femoral Pulse. You can find the latest additions of Femoral Pulse listed below. In addition we organise the Book Co-op which allows students to purchase textbooks at discounted prices. Furthermore, by way of the Conference Fund, the VSSV assists students financially to attend educational conferences and seminars.

The Veterinary Science degree is challenging. The VSSV is here to make life just that little bit easier and more enjoyable for students.

Sincerely,

Clare Matheson
