Credit for Previous Study
Legislation
Statute 11.1 ‘Entry Quotas and Admissions’ provides for a Faculty to determine the conditions for credit – Sections 11.1.6, 11.1.8 and 11.1.9
Policy
- The BVSc course is a set course and, as well as meeting University expectations, curriculum and standards must meet professional registration requirements as stipulated by the Australian Veterinary Boards Council.
- The Faculty has determined that credit will not be granted for subjects in either the third or final year of the BVSc course.
- Subjects in the course are not common to other science / biomedical science programs and are unique to the requirements of Veterinary Science.
- Thus only students with previous veterinary studies are likely to be considered for credit.
- Given that even between Australian Veterinary Schools there is a difference in the sequence of the delivery of some curriculum topics, a year to next year transfer cannot be assumed. Applicants are considered on an individual basis for this reason.
- Students presenting with previous veterinary science studies from overseas must be considered on an individual basis because of the diversity of their backgrounds.
Application
- Consideration on an individual basis for the purpose of credit is done in conjunction with the selection process.
- The application form available on the Web from http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/courses/credit.html
and should be completed and returned to the Faculty.
Frequently asked questions
I have a veterinary qualification obtained overseas. Can I be granted advanced standing in the course?
If you have obtained a veterinary qualification from an overseas university you should note that places for entry beyond the first year are limited. Can I gain credit for Extension Program studies?
If you enrol in a degree at the University of Melbourne, you can obtain credit for a successfully completed University of Melbourne Extension Program subject, if it can be studied as part of your degree.
For further information visit Melbourne Extension Program
The Faculty of Science would determine credit for any subjects under this program for students in the Pre-veterinary stream and similarly for students in first year Science aspiring to transfer to Veterinary Science.
Can I study the first year of science at another university to meet the prerequisites for post first year selection into Veterinary Science?
Yes, provided the Biology, Chemistry and Physics subjects are equivalent to those subjects offered in first year of Science at the University of Melbourne. For a listing of equivalent subjects see Entry Requirements.
