Doctor of Veterinary Medicine - a 4-year program for graduates (from 2011)
Overview
The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine* (DVM) is the newly created graduate degree offered by the Melbourne School of Veterinary Science. With the new DVM* we have taken a revitalised look at how we can bring together technological change, clinical and scientific progress, and stimulating teaching and learning methods.
The graduate program is available to students who have completed a biological sciences degree with the necessary prerequisite subjects.

Entry requirements
Completion of a biological science degree.
Students can either complete the Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne with an Animal Health and Disease major (Veterinary Bioscience specialisation) OR a biological science degree from Melbourne or another institution (see below for eligible degrees and majors).
Graduates with an Animal Health and Disease major (Veterinary Bioscience specialisation) will receive 100 points (1 year) credit in the DVM*.
Prerequisite subjects for graduate entry to the DVM* are at least one semester of study in each of cell biology and biochemistry. Selection will be based on results obtained in all third year and second year science subjects, weighted 75:25 towards the third year subjects. Interviews may be conducted in order to clarify aspects of an applicant’s application, and students may be asked to provide references or evidence to demonstrate their interest in a veterinary career.
Appropriate biological science degrees and majors for graduate entry to the DVM include:
Agriculture, Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Dentistry, Domestic Animal Science, Genetics, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology or Zoology.
Course outline
From 2011, the four year graduate entry pathway will offer veterinary students the best possible preparation for twenty-first century careers in a rapidly changing and increasingly global workforce. Students can expect to learn the latest theory and practice, with plenty of practical hands-on experience, taught by a team of leading veterinarians.
Through the DVM*, students will undertake integrated studies that encourage and facilitate learning.The first and second year of the DVM* will be taught at Veterinary Pre-Clinical Campus in Parkville, and the third and fourth years will be taught at the at the Werribee campus of the University of Melbourne and the University's Veterinary Clinic and Hospital. The fourth year of the program will be devoted to workplace and experiential learning in our busy Veterinary Clinic and Hospital, in private practices and industry. There will also be the opportunity to undertake research during the final year.
