Local Entry Requirements
It is essential for Veterinary Science students to have a thorough understanding of the science that underpins animal health and develop a foundation in the basic sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. If you would like to become a Veterinarian you have two options to gain entry into the Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
- Entry from Year 12
- Direct Entry
Entry From Year 12
Students that gain entry into the pre-veterinary course will be studying Physics, Biology, Chemistry and one elective with the Faculty of Science. In second year you then commence at the Faculty of Veterinary Science for four years of study.
Year 12 prerequisites for entry to the pre-veterinary year
The prerequisite subjects for Veterinary Science entry from year 12 are VCE English, Chemistry and either Maths Methods OR Physics.
ENTER score required
The clearly in rank for a round one Commonwealth Supported Place in 2008 was 98.95; Australian Fee Places are not available for the pre-veterinary year.
Application Process
Applications are made through VTAC www.vtac.edu.au

Direct Entry To Bachelor Of Veterinary Science (BVSc)
To apply for direct entry into the four year Bachelor of Veterinary Science you must have completed a first year of an approved science course taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics equivalent to those subjects offered in the first year of the University of Melbourne’s Bachelor of Science.
Veterinary Science and the Melbourne Model
The Faculty of Veterinary Science will be joining the Melbourne Model as from 2011, with our very first graduate professional entry program commencing in 2012. Entry to the graduate professional entry program will require prior completion of an undergraduate degree - the Bachelor of Science offered at the University will provide one of the pathways to the new graduate professional entry Veterinary Science degree.
The last intake for the current pre-veterinary stream will be in 2009, with the very last intake for the current four-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree being in 2010. Please note that we are still in the process of finalising the structure of the new graduate professional degree, and more detailed information will be available shortly.
University preparation
The following list provides some guidance as to approved courses and subjects. However if a course/institution is not listed, or you are not sure about a subject selection, please provide the Faculty with the subject details for biology, chemistry and physics from an official handbook for validation as prerequisites.
| INSTITUTION AND COURSE | PREREQUISITE SUBJECTS |

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA |

MURDOCH, QUEENSLAND AND SYDNEY Veterinary Science |
The first year of these veterinary courses does not meet the Melbourne prerequisites |
* If you have studied Physics at Year 12 and choose to study any Physics unit designed for students with no year 12 Physics, then there will be a debit of 15 per cent on your mark when calculating your prerequisite average for veterinary science selection
It is advisable that you check your University Course handbook prior to finalising your course preferences. The following points may assist you.
- Check that all the prerequisites subjects are available and that they comprise no less than a quarter of the year’s workload each (eg a one-semester Physics subject will not meet the Physics prerequisite).
- Each subject should be taught over the whole academic year (two semesters) and be about three hours of lectures and three hours of practical work per week (eg a subject with no practical component would not meet the prerequisite standard).
- Generally, subjects should be those which allow progression to second-year level subjects in that discipline (eg a subject designated ‘terminal’ is unlikely to meet the prerequisite standard, with the possible exception of Physics)
- Biology should have components of botany, zoology, genetics and cell biology. (eg a human biology subject, as offered in some biomedical science courses, is not appropriate.)
Prerequisite performance
Based on previous years you may require an average at the higher end of a second-class honours degree (H2A = 75% - 79%) in the prerequisite subjects to be competitive for a CSP place.
Application
Application forms are available from the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Faculty of Science from August. The closing date is usually the last Friday in September, however this may be extended due to the installation of a new student system. Please watch this space for further information.
Previous Work Experience
The experience of the applicant in fields relevant to Veterinary Science may be taken into account if you are in the middle band of applicants. See selection process for more information.
Deferrals
Please note that successful applicants may not apply to defer commencement of the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree, this applies to both the pre-veterinary route and direct entry. Students may reapply.
